Frequently asked questions

About the UK Phone Number Checker

What is a UK phone number checker?

A tool that tells you what type of UK phone number you have (landline, mobile, freephone, premium, etc.), what area or region it is associated with, and which network operator Ofcom originally allocated the number block to.

How accurate is the lookup data?

The number-block allocations come directly from Ofcom, the UK regulator, updated weekly. The area code to city mapping comes from Ofcom's own area codes lookup tool. The tool is as accurate as Ofcom's published data.

Does it tell me who specifically called me?

No. UK phone number data does not include the name of the specific person or business that owns a number, and there is no free public dataset for that. This tool tells you what type of number it is, what area it is from, and which network operator was originally allocated the block, not who owns the individual number.

Can I use it for non-UK numbers?

No. This tool covers UK numbers only. If you enter a non-UK number, it will tell you it could not match the format.

Why does it say "originally allocated to" for mobile numbers?

UK mobile numbers can be ported freely between networks. The number block was allocated by Ofcom to a specific mobile operator when it was first assigned, but the current network for a specific number may be different if the owner has ported it. Public data does not include the current network after porting.

Is using this tool free?

Yes. Free to use, no sign-up, no data captured or stored about lookups.

Where does the data come from?

Number block allocations come from Ofcom's Numbering Data downloads. Area code to area/city mappings come from Ofcom's Telephone Area Codes tool. Both are published under the Open Government Licence.

How often is the data updated?

Ofcom publishes updates to the number allocations dataset most Wednesdays. This tool is refreshed against the latest Ofcom data periodically. The generation date is embedded in the underlying data file.

I think the number was a scam. What should I do?

Report it to Action Fraud at actionfraud.police.uk or by phone on 0300 123 2040. Do not call the number back. If you are with a UK mobile provider, you can also forward suspected scam text messages to 7726 (free of charge).

Can I report a number?

For scam and nuisance reports, use Action Fraud (see above). For issues with a specific number allocation, contact Ofcom directly. This tool is a free lookup service and does not maintain a scam reports database.

Data source and attribution

Number block allocations from Ofcom's Numbering Data. Area code to area/city mappings from Ofcom's Telephone Area Codes tool. Both are used under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

This tool is provided free by ONSIM, a UK B2B telephony provider offering virtual landlines, business SIMs, and compliance-grade call recording. The tool does not store your lookups or track individual numbers.
