International dialling

UK Country Code: +44

The country code for the United Kingdom is +44, dialled as 0044 from most countries. To call any UK number from abroad, remove the leading 0 and add +44: the mobile 07911 123456 becomes +44 7911 123456, and the London landline 020 7946 0123 becomes +44 20 7946 0123.

How to dial UK numbers from abroad

One rule covers every UK number: drop the leading 0, add +44. Here is what that looks like for the common number types.

Dialling out from a landline instead of a mobile? Replace the + with your local international prefix: 00 in the UK, Europe and most of the world, 011 from the US and Canada. From any mobile, +44 works everywhere.

+44, 0044 and 011 44: all the same place

44 is the UK's assigned country code. What varies is the international prefix in front of it: the UK and most of the world use 00, North America uses 011, and the + symbol on mobiles stands in for whichever applies locally. 0044, +44 and 011 44 all reach the same UK number.

The digits after +44 are just the UK number without its leading 0. Every UK area code and its town or city is listed in the free UK area codes directory, and every mobile prefix in the UK mobile prefixes directory.

One caveat: +44 is not always a UK bundle call

The Crown Dependencies - the Isle of Man (01624), Jersey (01534) and Guernsey (01481) - share the +44 code but run their own telecoms networks, and calls to them are often excluded from UK call bundles and can be surprisingly expensive.

Before dialling an unfamiliar +44 number, thirty seconds with the free UK call cost checker tells you what your provider will charge, and the UK phone number checker tells you what the number actually is.
