Local numbers

The 0208 Area Code, Explained

Straight answer: there is no 0208 code - it is 020, London. Numbers beginning 020 8 are the range that inherited outer London's numbers when 0181 became 020 in the year 2000: Croydon to Enfield, Ealing to Ilford, the number on the local shop sign for decades.

ONSIM provides London numbers on your mobile from £5/month + VAT, and existing 020 8 numbers can be ported in and kept.

Where 0208 came from

Outer London dialled 0181 through the 1990s (and 01 then 081 before that). In the Big Number Change of 2000, London consolidated on a single 020 code with 8-digit local numbers: 0181 numbers became (020) 8xxx xxxx, keeping their old digits behind the new code. The "8" is the first digit of the local number - but because the change preserved outer London's numbering wholesale, the range kept its suburban character.

That is why the garage in Kingston, the school in Bromley and the surgery in Enfield all carry 020 8 numbers: they are the same numbers those organisations held in the 0181 era.

Why am I getting calls from 0208?

Because everyday London lives here: schools, surgeries, councils, tradespeople, local firms across the outer boroughs. A 020 8 number in your call log is usually precisely what it looks like.

Familiarity attracts imitators, though - trusted ranges are the ones scammers spoof. An unexpected caller wanting bank details, passwords or remote access is a scam whatever number they show. Decode any UK number with the free ONSIM UK phone number checker.

Keep the 0208 number you already have

For an outer-London business, a long-held 020 8 number is local credibility you cannot buy - and the PSTN switch-off does not have to take it. Port it to ONSIM and it lives on the mobile network: on a Landline SIM in your team's handsets, or as a Virtual Landline forwarded to any phone. Porting in is included on Landline SIM, or a one-off £20 + VAT on Virtual Landline.

Need a new London number instead? Most new allocations start 020 4 - equally London, plentiful supply. If 020 8 specifically matters, ask us about availability.
