This is the opening move of "pig butchering": a long-game fraud where the relationship itself is the weapon. The scammer nurtures the connection for weeks before mentioning how well their investments are doing. Victims are walked through real-looking trading platforms showing fake profits, encouraged to invest more, and can even withdraw small amounts early to build trust. The platform and profits are fabricated; deposits go straight to the fraud operation.

  • ✗Trading results that look too smooth, and pressure to add funds to "unlock" withdrawals.

What the real Wrong does

A genuine wrong-number sender says thanks and disappears. Nobody who texted the wrong stranger builds a friendship from it, and no legitimate investment is ever offered through one. The safe response to a misdirected text is no response at all.

If you get one

Do not click, reply or call any number in the message. Forward it for free to 7726 so your mobile network can block the campaign, then delete it. If a call or text claims to be your bank, hang up and dial 159 - the UK anti-fraud line that connects you to your real bank. If you have already entered card details, tell your bank immediately; if you have lost money, report it to Action Fraud. A reply confirms your number is live and attended, which upgrades it on target lists even if you never engage further. If the conversation continues, you are in the scammer's script. Not replying costs nothing - a genuine mis-texter simply realises their mistake.

The shape is the giveaway: a relationship that began with a random text, an investment platform your new friend recommends, smooth guaranteed-looking returns, and requests for more money before you can withdraw.
